Rheinwohnungsbau Digitalises Tenant Electricity Metering with Us: A Data Foundation for the Climate Strategy

Successful decarbonisation of existing building stock hinges entirely on the quality of its underlying data. To precisely guide its climate and photovoltaics strategy, Düsseldorf-based housing provider Rheinwohnungsbau GmbH is relying on our dependable metering infrastructure in our role as a competitive metering point operator.
As part of this partnership, around 640 flats across 100 buildings have already been equipped with smart metering technology for electricity and heat.
1. The Housing Sector as a Driver for the Smart Meter Roll-Out
While the smart meter roll-out in many quarters remains narrowly focused on statutory mandatory installations, the collaboration between Rheinwohnungsbau and our team demonstrates a different approach: the housing company has opted for a voluntary, comprehensive roll-out across its electrified central heating systems.
The rationale is clear: an existing property portfolio only becomes energy-controllable when backed by a complete, continuously available data foundation. For its metering point operations, Rheinwohnungsbau is leveraging the competitive model provided under the German Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG).
2. A Multi-Utility Metering Infrastructure for Electricity and Heat
Under the partnership, we are taking on competitive metering point operations (wMSB). This encompasses providing digital electricity and heat meters, as well as managing the end-to-end capture and transmission of consumption data via a unified infrastructure.
This setup unlocks critical use cases in modern property management that extend far beyond simple meter reading:

Looking ahead, the partners are planning the next phase: Rheinwohnungsbau’s entire tenant electricity portfolio is set to be progressively fitted with our smart metering systems for electricity and heat over the coming years.
This seamless digital metering infrastructure establishes the fundamental prerequisite for the ongoing electrification and decarbonisation of the housing stock—ranging from PV expansion and heating supply optimisation to future energy efficiency measures.
